Abstract

Science is an important instrument that is indispensable in the process of changing social, economic and political systems. Therefore, science has top priority in the flow of modernisation. In this context, the idea of renewal in the field of adult science, especially among academics, experts and education activists has never subsided to be discussed. This article aims to emphasise the role of ijtihad as a method of thinking in the Islamic concept in the effort to produce ideas of renewal in the field of science. By using analytical descriptive methods from literature sources related to this topic, it is concluded that ijtihad in a broad sense is not only limited to efforts to istinbath fiqh laws, but ijtihad can be interpreted as a creative and innovative effort for the progress and goodness of all aspects of life, including education. Several problems, such as: scientific dichotomy, socio-cultural plurality, and the division of Islamic education into two madhhabs (modernists and traditionalists), are challenges in realising scientific progress. To answer the challenges faced, a fundamental and comprehensive ijtihad in various fields of science is needed
